  1. Larger hypertext systems
  2. ========================

  4.         During this last year, I have built several commercial hypertext
  5.         systems, with 60,000 plus files and 300,000 plus cross-links.
  6.         To make the hypertext jumps instantaneous, I keep each file small,
  7.         and limit each directory to 128 files.  How does this work?
  8.  
  9. Files   With any hypertext jump, HyGlos first searches the directory
  10. =====   containing the HyGlos program.  If the file is not found in this
  11.         directory, the HyGlos program then searches the subdirectory named
  12.         by the first three characters of the file name.
  13.  
  14. Speed   Using this automatic subdirectory method, I've seen no reduction in
  15. =====   hypertext performance with several hundred subdirectories.

  17.         However, because PC-DOS allocates 4K per file regardless, a 32 Meg
  18.         hard disk is effectively limited to 8,000 files regardless of the
  19.         size of each file.  The solution?
  20.  
  21.         I put my larger systems on CD-ROMs <link15 1 14>, which lets
  22.         HyGlos rapidly access over 240,000 pages of text using a unique
  23.         rapid file-access system (one CD head read) in PC-Hypertext.
